The Los Angeles Rams eventually recognized they needed to acquire depth at running back. Sony Michel has now joined the team.
The Rams acquired the now-former New England Patriots back on Monday morning at 4:19 a.m. PT, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Two late-round selections are also included in the transaction.

And what about those late picks? A fifth-rounder and a sixth-rounder.
The Rams’ Twitter account has already posted a graphic.
The Rams Twitter account was up and running with this edit on social media before the sun came up in Southern California, and even before the Interstate 405 traffic.
Following Cam Akers’ injury, Sean McVay denied having to add a running back through free agency for weeks, assuring reporters before training camp that he didn’t need to. “We have a few young running backs on our roster, and I’m interested to see how they handle this chance. I’m not sure whether we’d rule out going the experienced path, but it’s not something we’re seeking to do right now.”
However, more than Akers’ torn Achilles injury likely influenced the decision to sign Michel, whose Patriots defeated the Rams in the 2019 Super Bowl in Atlanta, with Michel rushing for 94 yards and one touchdown on 18 attempts.
Darrell Henderson, who had been predicted to be the new RB1 for weeks, injured his thumb during Monday’s practice, but it is expected to be completely recovered before the season opener against the Chicago Bears on September 12. However, Raymond Calais, a running back and kick returner, will be sidelined for four to six months due to a foot injury that would need surgery. Akers was also put on waivers by the Rams, although he may be re-added if he clears waivers.
Why did the Patriots abandon Michel?
Michel, who is 26 years old, has made 28 starts for the Patriots and has 2,292 yards and 14 touchdowns in his career. Michel rushed for 912 yards and seven touchdowns during the Pats’ previous Super Bowl run.
Last season, though, his carries were restricted as the Pats only gave him the ball 79 times for 449 yards and one score. Due to a quadriceps injury, Michel only played in nine games, starting six of them. Michel eventually lost his starting position to Damien Harris.
Meanwhile, during the Patriots’ two preseason games in August, former Corona, California native J.J. Taylor put up impressive numbers. According to the Boston Globe on Monday, August 23, former Arizona Wildcat Taylor has become increasingly used to carrying the Pats’ rushing burden. According to reports, the Patriots are now sold on Taylor and have opted to trade Michel.

Michel’s contract calls for a basic salary of $1.79 million in the last year of his contract, 2021. The Patriots, on the other hand, have decided not to activate his fifth-year option for 2022.
With Michel’s addition, the Rams now have Xavier Jones, Jake Funk, Otis Anderson, and Michel as active backs for Saturday’s preseason game against the Denver Broncos.
Meanwhile, Michel’s bio has already been placed on the Rams team website, which can be seen here.
