After an outstanding season last year, all eyes will be on the Phoenix Suns as they begin a new season. The big issue is whether they’ll be able to build on their success. Will they be able to repeat as NBA champions this time? Fans have their own predictions, so we thought we’d share ours.
For the 2021-22 NBA season, here are four bold predictions for the Phoenix Suns.
Predictions from the Sun:
1. A trip to the Western Conference Finals for the second consecutive year
The Suns’ roster from last season, which advanced to the NBA Finals, remains mostly intact. Great role players like Jae Crowder, Cameron Payne, and Mikal Bridges surround Devin Booker, Chris Paul, and Deandre Ayton. The Suns’ front staff understands that keeping everyone in the building is just one part of the objective. The next stage is to improve. And they did it by bringing in JaVale McGee, an athletic big man, and Landry Shamet, an offensive gunner.
Aside from that, the Suns’ prospects in the Western Conference seem to be bright. Jamal Murray and Kawhi Leonard will be out for the most of the season for the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Clippers, respectively. Fans may wonder what’s preventing the Suns from winning it all if the Nuggets and Clippers are projected to have a disappointing season. Let’s not forget that the Lakers enjoyed a huge offseason haul. They are, indeed, elderly and gray. We can’t rule out a LeBron James-led squad, however. When Klay Thompson returns, the Golden State Warriors may be a handful as well.
2. Mikal Bridges will be named to the All-Defensive Team and will earn Most Improved Player.
Mikal Bridges was 11th in votes for the 10-man All-Defensive Team choices last season. He was just a few votes away from winning. Nonetheless, it was proof that Bridges was given the credit he deserved. After all, Chris Paul, Devin Booker, and head coach Monty Williams received the most of the credit for the Suns’ success last season. Only true fans are aware that Bridges played a significant role in their campaign. Bridges is expected to maintain the same defensive effort in the next season. He’ll keep being a nuisance, making the correct reads, stealing the ball, and stripping the ball. In other words, everything a great defensive player does.
Aside from that, we may see an improvement in his offense, which might push him into the discussion for Most Improved Player. Bridges will be the team’s third scoring option after Booker and Paul, according to coach Monty Williams. Bridges responded by saying he’s working on his grip and strength. Bridges seems to be on his path to become a two-way player in the 2021-22 NBA season.
3. Chris Paul will win the Most Valuable Player award.
Chris Paul finished sixth in MVP voting last season. He finished eighth the previous season in his lone time with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Paul was also a perennial MVP candidate throughout his time in Los Angeles and New Orleans. Paul’s year may come in the 2021-22 NBA season.
A player must demonstrate why he is the most essential player on the team in order to earn the coveted MVP award. Another need is the player’s current story. Over the past three years, Paul has checked all of these boxes. In only one season, he turned the Thunder into a playoff club. The Suns are suddenly considered a genuine championship contender. In the 2021-22 NBA season, Paul’s story will remain the same. Voters will come to their senses and see why Paul is known as the Point God.
4. Monty Williams takes home the Coach of the Year award.
There was already considerable buzz around Monty Williams before he was appointed head coach of the Phoenix Suns. Williams is a superb coach, according to his peers and experts. His first stint as a head coach in New Orleans served as a warm-up for him. He took a step back to become an assistant head coach before joining Mike Krzyzewski’s coaching team for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games, when he helped the United States win gold. Now we’re witnessing the fruits of Williams’ work.
He finished second in Coach of the Year voting last season, behind New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau. It was, without a doubt, well-deserved. The fact that the Suns advanced to the NBA Finals while the Knicks were eliminated in the first round will be on the minds of voters this season. They’ll consider not just how a coach turned around an organization, but also how long he or she stayed in charge. That fight will be won by Williams. He’ll also win NBA Coach of the Year at some point.
